I think this came out very well for a portrait on snow. Snow can be notoriously hard to photograph, coming out blue-ish or reflecting light badly. And you're right, it does look like a backdrop!

This is on snow?! Really?! I would never have guessed! It's a great portrait. If the rest of the landscape is that bleak, maybe try on with your dog in one corner of the shot? It's a great portrait as is though. Nice focus and color.

Super shot! All it needs is a little life in the eyes from a reflector or flash. Great work!

That looks great!
Really does look like a backdrop... Before I read what you said, I was thinking "Where is the snow? "

Default retriever in snow

Thank you all for your gracious comments...''Butter'' doesn't freeze her tush
as long as there is some retrieving involved...the only thing that worried me
was that this was frozen snow and I didn't want her to break a leg, slipping
and sliding around.
I live on a mountain in Virginia and sometimes we get snow that immediately
freezes. See attached.
As for the life in the eyes...alittle photoshop brushwork would work nicely to
achieve that. I am alittle of a purist...don't touch it...what appeared...appeared. if I had used a flash to achieve the life in the eyes...
it may have not given me this shot. Plus have you ever held a dog still for
longer then 20 seconds?
Again thanks for the comments.
