I really like the colors, especially the background. I think its a nice shot, but I feel it wood be even better if the bars.....deck railing? was not there. It wood have also been more interesting if there was more detail in the dog's eye.

Its really hard for me to critic a shot that I doubt I could have done better, but those are just my thoughts.

I dont think I'm ever gonna be too good at this. I really like the shot thou.

Nice capture but the lighting is a little flat with no catchlights visible in the eyes. The competing bright background is a little hot and detracts from the subject. I could not tell if you used frontal flash in this shot from your EXIF data on flickr.

Clockdoc - No flash was used, honestly I did not think about it. It was about 10am and the dog was sitting on the deck while I was playing with my new 70-300VR lens. The sun was bright but it was in the front of the house being blocked by the house (back of the house is west). That is why you see the bright light behind the dog, from the low sun in the front shining towards the back.

The shot would have been better with a faster lens that would have blurred the background even more - but hey you gotta shoot with what ya got at the moment.

Congratulations on your new lens! I hear that VR technilogy is really great. Since you were at 230mm you were probably wide open at that focal length. If you are using it on your D80, check out the way you can regulate the flash output (down to 1/128 power). It gives you a considerable amount of control for flash-fill. Enjoy the 70-300mm!
