My wife caught this as we were enjoying a evening at the beach.

Hi jpendley77:
Nice photo. You got a colorful background. There are some things you can do (or your wife) to improve that shot. The first thing that come to my mind is instead of using the horizontal framing, you should try vertical one, so it the photo and the way you are lifting your kid will have more impact.
Thanks for sharing it, and good luck on your next shots!

jpendley77,

. . . and your subject is much better represented. Empty sky will not be missed. You are teetering between silhouette and good portrait, so I'm not sure which you were going for.

I know that was my exact thought, the shot was very candid and not planned or else we would have tried for both I have played with it a bit in PS and came out with a great silhouette and i'm working on the portrait now, too bad it was not shot in RAW! But i'm glad we caught the moment anyhow. Thanks for the help

FYI, This is a Camera Raw "Cheat".... When you open your photo and the dialogue at lower left says something like "open as jpeg" Change it to open as "camera raw". It will open in the Camera Raw window and allow you to do some "faux adjustments" as if you had shot in Raw...2 second fix:
