Gives that nice dramatic look

I think you could do one more shot with the camera slightly lower and pointing upwards, just to see if it's increase the impression of the moment.

I also like the blurry background

Hi, thanks a bunch...I'll have to try that next time I go to the Bontanical Garden. This was a 'having fun' shot. LOL

i like all the drama of the darker shot too.....it's nicely exposed for my taste....

i would like to see the upper leaf either darkened or blurred a bit....

thanks...

i too like my photos a bit on the darker side. perhaps a reflcetion of my personality? lol
I think it might be stronger tho if it were mirrored. I'm not fond of all the empty space at the left of the rose. Remeber your eyes generally will look from left to right so you'd want the rose to be more of the focal point. I generraly like to leave more open space in the direction of where the subject is "aimed' at. Does that mke sense?

What I don't like is the glossy white reflection on that leaf at the top; the eye tends to be drawn to points of contrast and this one has nothing interesting going on.

One approach would be to crop in closer and make the most of that amazing "face" shown by the rose.

I really like the way the rose itself is exposed in this shot. It gets across the 'rose red' quality without that blinding OMG RED!!! effect that digital cameras sometimes do to red objects.

I agree with others on the background... the light splotch at top is distracting, and the darkness on the left seems a little odd. I think my brain wants to see the red petals and all black otherwise, but when it sees the muted background it goes "ehh, this is distracting."

(I have the same problems with a lot of my own macro shots... I have a good look at my subject and then all this pesky background that won't go away )

Bright red objects (and, to be honest, any flowers that have a glow about them) are very hard to capture - this is definitely a beautifully rich capture of the colour.

I think if you just burned out the color of that leaf at the top a bit, it would really make the picture POP. I like the position of the rose on the right and I don't think it would have the same 'feel' if it were on the left. But that's just me. Also, I noticed on the 'big' image on your flickr account, it could use a smidge of sharpening. If you use Photoshop, one use of the 'sharpen' filter should do it.

I absolutely adore this photo. Well done!
