Default Iron

I took this close up of a steam engines wheels and con rods with a B&W image in mind. The effect I was after in the B&W conversion was to emphasise the look of hard metal

I think you achieved your goal of getting the "hard metal" look, however, IMHO, there is a little too much going on in the composition. My eye goes to the lightest part which appears to be a large nut in the 1/3 position. What else did you do in post production?

Nice shot. I am also a D40 user (flickr)
Thanks to shots like that one...photographers are helping make that camera look really good.
