In my opinion, there isn't much to critique here, an adorable child in fluffy white feathers, central composition, well exposed white feathers with sufficient details, dark background making the subject pop out brilliantly, soft light on face and arms - what more can one look for? I am curious.

My only qualm is the shadow on her face and the slight blur on some of the feathers. Otherwise its an absolutely wonderful picture.

The extreme contrast against the black background makes this one a little hard to read. A professor once told me when critiquing one of my shots, "Black is like garloc, a little bit goes a long way." Here the large amount of black overpowers the subject, IMHO. Did you also try it against a white background in a more "high-key" fashion? You held nice detail in the feathers. Please tell us more about your lighting for this one.

I love the white feathers against the black background...what I think could have made this picture even more interesting was a different angle or perspective...maybe shooting down or up...or having her to the side instead of right in the center? Past that, I think it's lovely. I think I shall go out and purchase a boa for myself.

thank you so much for the advice. i really appreciate it. it was a spur of the moment photo where i placed the child on a black backdrop at the end of a shoot. she was already very tired so i was lucky to get what i did, i guess. i appreciate the advice about using black. i have to admit it is my favorite backdrop to use because of the dramatic impact. i used plain window lighting for this shot- as you can see there is a direct change in lighting on half of her face. thank goodness for photoshop to bring back the detail!
