Default My 1st Real Try at night shots...

Well I took well over a hundred pictures...and out of the whole bunch these were my fav 3...But I need your guys' help.

First off on this one...how can I avoid all those wierd white streaks that look like they are ghosting. I took about 20 some odd shots from this corner, and this one was the only one that came out this clear...but the ghost lines kill the shot.

I like your second shot. I'd say it's the best one. I don't care for the hot spot on the window though, but some things can't be avoided. The third shot is pretty good too, although there's a little to much black area on the right for my liking. Sorry I don't have any advice on the light streaks.

My only suggestion is to look for different types of lights. Different colors can make a night photo more intriguing.

Learning how to use your camera requires The messing around technique . That way when a good shot arrives or presents itself you see it and know exactly what to do...The old adage- practice makes perfect. And BTW I like the second pic that you have.

I'm guessing that the white streaks in the first shot are from lens flare. If you were using an SLR, I'd recommend putting a hood on the lens and removing any filters. You have to be careful about any light falling directly on the lens (you also get flare shooting directly into the sun). You could shade the lens with something (e.g., your hand), and that might help.

I would like the 1st one the best if the busy building were cropped out. It adds too much to one side of the photo.

I will try to mess around with it some more tonight, and I'll slap the hood on the lens to see if that will help with glare. As far as the 2nd shot it took me a while to take, I ended up having to put the wide angle lens on the camera. After a few more shots I finally got what I was looking for. Keep the critiques coming...I really want to get better...

***Edit...I see why you edited it now...Sorry about leaving them big. I will hotlink with a thumbnail next time. I just don't like to make my pictures smaller. I feel they lose quality.

So any other suggestions beside that I can try for the 1st shot to reduce that ghosting effect? And for the record I am not talking about the cars lights...I actually wanted that in the picutre.

MarlonT42,

The link is to Darren Rowse's original intention (as I understand it) of how best to give each thread a chance to be viewed and commented on by as many members as time allows, and that as many members as possible could have at least one photo looked at each day, or in a few hours, whatever the number of daily posts would allow.

The 'Rules' for this Critique Forum

When you put up more, you're less likely to get a thorough commentary and you are adding to a volume already difficult to keep up with. It's not my issue; it is one I support completely. Just pick one shot you really want/need commentary on; use Flickr for a gallery. Then everyone will have a chance to get the attention they want/need too.

OK so I think I redemmed myself...I bought a hood for my camera, and after messing with the settings in the camera a little more I am finally able to take some great night shots with out any glare or ghosting effects... so here are 2 re-takes that I took the other night.

Just click on the picture so you can see the full res shot...
