The second shot is just fantastic... Inspiring me to get out there and take some night shots to shake things up a little!

playing with the settings & the lense hood helped alot , did you use a tripod ? and in your settings what did you set your shutter speed to ? Maybe some who are more use to taking these kind of shots would share what they use with us , I recently took my first fire works shots & was told by a retired pro to use 8 sec , and I was pleased with what i got , it is the max my camera will allow . with cars or people moving that would be a blur but I did not see movement in these photos so a slower shutter speed may be something that would help . what shutter speed does night photography of lights & no movement works best ? IYO .this is my fireworks with 8sec .

I love the second shot on your re-shoot. One of these days, I'm going to pack my bullet-proof vest and head to Boston for some night shots.

Hahahaha...it can't be that bad. I was walking around East LA when I took these.

I grew up in the suburbs, so the city at night frightens me. I took night classes in one of the roughest neighborhoods (Mission Hill) in Boston during college. One of my classmates got stabbed while being mugged between classes - during the day. My pulse rate was probably approaching 200 on the walk to the parking lot every class.

On the plus side, the slow shutter speed would catch the muzzle fire just splendidly
