Default spot fixing

August2007B-9a
I am happy with most aspects of this shot. What I don't like, and what I knew was a problem when I shot it, it the lighting on her face. I use GIMP for post-processing. I have not discovered how to select a certain area and adjust the levels or curves only in that area. I would appreciate any tips, or any links to any tips, on how to do this.

I know you can do it with layers but I have not quite figured it out myself so I cant give you tips. The program I use allows for adjusting highlights and shadows to an extent.
I moved form the Denver area a couple of years ago. I miss the resturaunts!

Default Good Hi-lights

I think the hi-lights on her face are great. If your camera offers RAW file recording, you may want to shoot in RAW instead since RAW is of course the digital negative of the digital domain. You can still edit tones in JPEG of course but RAW retains more data while JPEG is of course compression.

Photoshop offers easy control of hi-lights. But pound for pound I would suggest shooting in RAW just to be sure. I purchased two memory cards just for that reason, because shooting in RAW will produce 6MB files on my Nikon D40 (compare: JPEG 1.?MB per file).

A little blown out, but I wouldn't say it's detrimental. Curves would be the best solution if you want to fix it though. Layer > Colors > Curves. Click on the curves canvas and drag the new point to x:250 y:230.

A combination of layers and overlay blending..

Do a self copy to new layer, increase exsposure, paint the light struck area's with eyedrop color from good skin at about 30%

Blur until the correction melds into the background.

If I spent more time I would have masked the dress and other parts of the picture to save detail and I probably would have added detail to the dress.

I will delete from my stream in about a week if you want to grab a copy.

Look at some of these articles on layers and blending

It's a sweet picture. The blown out shirt is a bit much to take in, but it doesn't ruin the photo by any means.

QNormal,

If you get a chance to try layers, consider adding a negative layer in Darken mode at 30%, over a copy of original. Then lighten copy of original and contrast until you see:

Blowout2

Dress has Noise added, Darken until subtle difference is to your liking. Watch for eye detail, keep it light.
