Default Another Niagara Falls Pic

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us
Shot with Canon EOS DIGITAL REBEL XTi at 2007-09-27
This is the American Falls taken off of prospect point. It was an extremely windy day. Im having trouble getting more detail out of the landscape with out overexposing the sky. I did some editing to the best of my ability to lighten the picture but my skills are limited I'm a beginner. Could it be my lens? I have the Canon Reble xti and all I have is the kit lens. As far as the pic goes what do you guys think?

was this taken during the sunset? i would guess it was, but i would much rather see it processed with a correct white balance for the water. the orange just makes it look dirty.
shame you couldn't have captured a bit more of the bluffs on the left, but overall i really like the composition. i would also look into cloning out that electrical tower.

When you have this kind of subject, you have to choose between exposing the dark ground and rocks or the bright water of the falls. In most cases, people would liked to concentrate on the water. So you need to lower your exposure if you want to get more contrast of the water, but in that case, the ground will be under exposed and you have to live with it with a closer crop.

In the future, something like a graduated neutral density filter would help with controling overexposure in skies and the like. I do agree with mdwsta4 - play with your white balance a bit here to make the water look a bit nicer.

Default ND Filter

You could try doing a little neutral density filter like xysmas suggested.

This is a tutorial on how to do it with GIMP that I've used. I'd suppose it could be easily adapted to Photoshop or whatever program you're using.

There appears to be another MikeM. I'm not him, I'm me.
