Default What do you think?

I took this at the Zoo the other day. At first glance do you see any broken rules? After looking at it I saw that the point of focus (eyes) is not obeying the rules of thirds, or is it. Too much in the middle? Is that ok for this shot?

I though the space in front was ok but can it benefit from a little more space?

Any other opinions on anything would be great. Thank you.

Hi. Nice capture. Some purists may complain about the 'centering' of the subject. I do like the way the bird is facing to the left, keeping your eye in the frame longer. Thanks for sharing this with us.

Thank you for your comments. I was also thinking that the centering might have messed up the picture because of all the rules.

There is not a thing wrong with the composition. If the bird were centered the "action" of the photo would have ceased. In this case the human eye starts at the tail and moves through the eye to the beak and into "outer space". Even the branch is pointing to the focal point. The whole thing makes the bird look as though he is on the hunt. I love it, besides, birding is a very difficult field. The birds just don't seem to cooperate with photographers very well unless the photogs are in a blind. The slightest move to "properly compose" and the darn things fly away!

I like it! I think a bit off the bottom and the right side even closer to the birds body would be acceptable but its fine the way it is. I just gotta say that all the talk of Rules makes me gringe! Its photography as a hobb and an art all in one. Guidelines are okay but not to be ademently adhered to. There are photos that just need to break the rules to look right.
I think bout how i want t oshow the image more so than "is it too centered" or "am i obeying the rule of thirds"
Very nice shot management.

I think it looks fantastic, and there is room to move with cropping etc anyhow!

Great shot, I love wild life photography...

Thank you all for the comments and the critiques. I wasn't thinking about rules and I am fairly new to photography so I tend to try and pay attention to them when I look at my pictures.

Englishteacher: Thank you, I read what you said and looked back at the picture. You are right. And maybe I shouldn't pay attention to the rules :-). That was one of the few pictures that came out good.

BTW, it was shot at the Zoo. I went for the first time. I was trying to take pictures of the animals so that you would never know they were taken at the Zoo.

I have a few here. http://www.potenchial.com/blog/

Thank you again.

I like it, did you take it in JPG or RAW? What post processing did you use for this shot?

I love the colours, works really well against the background - especially behind the beak, it looks like it's glowing!

As the guy said a few posts above, by the time you have thought about composition the things flown away!

I've got a picture of a dragonfly that happened to be flying past my lens at the same time I was testing it, which was crazy as it was just there at the right time - if you want to see it it's on the nature page of my site:

I cant find anything I don't like about this shot. The colors are great, the background is most acceptable, and its a fine looking bird.

I think you did too good.

Sorry for the absence. I have a problem with remember to subscribe to the thread. It was taken in JPEG because I need to cramp a lot of photos on the card. I sharpened with USM in PS but that was it.

That is crazy with the dragon fly .
