Default 1st shot with the new Nikon

hey everyone.

i am almost recovered from foot surgery. i am still on crutches but out of the pink cast and into a walking boot. still no weight bearing on the foot. But i still went out and did some railfanning. i went to pick up a picture from a friend befor i left and his St. bernard was out. i had the camera, and she stopped an looked at me and this was too precious. But it seems like the focal point was wrong. the outer edges of he head seem fuzzy.

I couldnt get a smile out of her.

And yes Saralonde, she is a total softie. big bark but you have a freind for life once ya pet her.

napatom2005,

Welcome back to the forum. We are glad to hear that you recovered from your surgery. Looking for more train shots soon

Composition and her eye sharpness looks fine for me. I hope the light is falling from her right side. Would be more pleasent if that light is evenly distributed throughout her face.

Though its nice shot and kudos to your enthu..

Hi napatom2005

I think over all the focus is not bad.

I have the D80 but I think the auto focus is the same in the D40x.

If I had to guess I would say that you where using either Auto Area or Dynamic Area "Autofocus Area Mode"

In that case the high contrast between the black nose and the white fur around the nose "grabbed" the auto focus.

(this happened to me a lot when I first got the camera)

You could try switching to Single Area "Autofocus Area Mode" and focus on say the eyes then lock the focus and shoot.

Joe

Nice shots! I just got the D80 a weel ago and am using the kits lenses. Focus can be tricky, especially on furry critters and in low light levels as I have found out. I'll have to experiment with the single area mode as Maggie suggested. Have you digested all the settings available for the camera yet? 8-)
