Default Conchos

Here I am, crawling out of my little hole to post a picture...

Conchos

This picture was taken as part of a "let's learn how to use off-camera flash" experiment I did. I happen to have several interesting pairs of boots, so I figured I'd grab something difficult-to-light such as black leather, whip out the poster board, fend off cats, etc.

What do I want to know? Well, do you like it? Is there too much white space on the left? Uhm... actually, I really like this picture, so I guess I just want opinions.

Oh! Is it a problem that the left side of the pic is completely blown out? I mean is there some technical reason why that would be bad if I were going to print it, for example?

Out of Fear of getting slapped with a lawsuit, I am NOT going to post a boot photo that I saw on Scott Kelby's Blog. It's one of my favorites that he's done.
Yours is okay too.... And yes, I think the white makes it look a bit like an ad for Ranch and Home...

Just my opinion, but I don't think the extra white space or the fact that your left side is completely blown out is a problem at all. I like it. The only thing I'd suggest is that you clean up the shadowed area on the bottom right near the toe.

EDIT: But then again I've never seen an add for Ranch and Home. lol

Good job. Might try throwing this up on a stock site if you have a larger portfolio.

I totally agree! I reread my post and it didn't come across the way I meant it to, sorry. What I should have said, I like your photo/composition, it would be a GREAT ad shot for, well, Ranch & Home (LOL) It's our local Western Store!

I really am new to this whole photography thing, but in my opinion, the white on the left is a little blinding........I don't know how you could fix it or if you even should.........just a first impression to me........overall, I like it!

thekevinmonster!
I can see that you don't walk ...a lot with your boots.

Hey man, for me, that's a very nice composition. I specially like the way the white and the black play and mingle together. My (only ) little "but" is concerning the light reflection behind the boot. If it could be a bit less bright.

Good job! I like this shot. The angle and lighting are very well done. I looked at your pool on Flickr, and I think this is the best shot of this series. At first, I was thinking it would be nice to see more of the boot, but this is just right. I like how the lighting accentuates all the texture in the leather.

Thanks! (Thanks everyone else, too!) I actually couldn't get the entire boot in the shot thanks to the paltry size of my backdrop. Well, I could have, but then the backdrop would have ended partway up and you would see unfinished stair supports and boxes behind it

I'm pretty sure this was one of the first, if not the first, shot of my little experiment. I'm surprised it came out so well. It's like recording a hit song... do 30 takes, and the one from the demo ends up on the recording.
