Default cake anyone?

Chocolate Cake

I baked a cake yesterday for my girlfriend since she was coming home from out of town and thought it would be a neat surprise. But while she ate the cake I thought it would be a good opportunity for some food shots! Any thoughts on improvement? i did a little bit of photoshop to clean up the background a bit since I used a black towel for the background.

Settings:

Camera: Canon EOS Digital Rebel XT
Exposure: 2 sec (2)
Aperture: f/11
Focal Length: 86 mm
ISO Speed: 100
Exposure Bias: -1 EV
Flash: Flash fired
Mode: Aperture Priority

Yay! Someone other than me baking cakes and posting pictures of them lol Plus, points for you for baking your girlfriend a cake, more boys should bake lol

I love the lime green plate / knife with the chocolate, the colours are really nice together. And I didn't realize that you'd used a towel for the background until I re-read your post. In the small size, the picture looked almost blurry, but I had a look at the larger size and it looks good there, so that doesn't seem to be a problem. The only thing I would've changed probably is the angle of it all. It's all very centered and head-on. Of course, you don't want to lose the plate and knife, so that makes it more difficult. Still, looks good.

Hi Nieton21:
As Nicole said, you can try another angle for the shot. Also IMHO as the cake is in dark colors, and the plate has a nice color I think it will be better seen on a white background or somthing brighter than black.
mmm made me hungry lol

Ya know, I was just reminded of something I've been meaning to do! Take pictures of my personal recipes to add to the cards in my file... I've been meaning to do this since my Sons started asking for my recipes (and those of my mother and grandmother). You have inspired me! Now, what should I make first.....

Ps. i LOVE taking pictures of food. I find it a fun challenge, since I know most food photography is done with fake food. Anyone interested can check out my recipe blog

to see some of my recent recipes/photos. :-)

thanks for the nice feedback! I used a black background because the best surface I had to use was black and I thought the background should match. I understand that there are some spots that might not have come through as well because of this but I was limited. I was very happy with how bold the plate looked against the black and would be afraid that it would lose some of its zing in a white environment.
