Default Out for a walk

Sunflower in the City

The other day I went out for a walk in the city (Portland, OR) and just took some pictures of random stuff I came across. I found a neat patch of flowers and plants that were in the middle of downtown.....it was quite random and unexpected. It was a neat contrast between the urban scape and this "garden" or whatever it was. Any advice on the shot would be great, or any advice on what to look for when out taking shots of random stuff.

settings:
Camera: Canon EOS Digital Rebel XT
Exposure: 0.003 sec (1/400)
Aperture: f/8
Focal Length: 119 mm
ISO Speed: 100
Flash: Flash did not fire
Exposure Program: Aperture priority

Great shot! I love the flowers against the urban setting. Very nice.

I wonder if there's a different angle you could shoot from that would allow you to get the flowers and the lamp without the tall dark building on the right side. I think the only thing bothering me is that the right side feels very heavy and dark. But I'm afrait that if you crop it out then you'll be too close to the flower.

Make sense?

Think it should be possible to sort this without resorting to cropping if your willing to photoshop it a bit.

If you select the building that you want to delete (with the magic wand - adding to the areas bit by bit) then selecting the brush tool, alt click on the sky and paint away the building.Because you have selected it - only the area inside the selection will be painted.

You might have to play about with the feathering and output of the brush but it should be possible to get rid of it without it showing up as having been drastically altered. I did try to upload my version but cant get it to let me!

Luckily I feel pretty confident in photoshop...so What do you guys think? Thanks for the advice...I feel it is a much lighter image now.... and no I walked by there today and couldn't get a shot at that angle, not without standing in the freeway that is :-)

Nieton21,

I like this shot and DOF works fine for this sort of shots. Nice work in edit...

For my taste crop/shot is too tight on top. Little crop at bottom could have popped that flower more!

Nice Photoshop work on removing the building in the background. Did you shoot this a larger aperture as well? I see you were in aperture priority and chose f/8 in this case.

sadly I didn't get a larger aperture I was a little bit of a hurry and only could get off a few shots of the scene. Palachandra I tried cropping it down at the bottom but it didn't seem right with the tall building the flower to me lost some of its significance without a lot of the vines and such, I did however crop it a bit at the bottom compared to what it was when I started.
