Just different. A self portrait is not just a quick snap - it is how you chose to portray yourself to the rest of the world.

I'm a bit late to the thread but I definitely like your new version better. The crop was by far the best thing you couldn've done to it and it really works now!

Thanks. I too like the new one best, I was just kinda seeing what it was like without the edit - the light was a little too harsh and unforgiving though. The edit is natural looking but not harsh. I like it a lot now!
The crop was a suggestion and it was a brilliant idea. |

Yep, I like the edit better as well. Nice job on the SP. If you are looking for a cheap reflector, you could always crinkle up some tin foil and wrap it around some cardboard.

Nice work on the self-portrait. I like the second posting better as well. You mentioned you were using one lens becasue of your release which was 'corded." Help me understand what you meant here. Are you using an electronic cable release with the camera on a tripod or is this one shot at arm's length handholding the camera?
I like the way you have posed yourself to take advantage of your light source. The next time you are in the mood to experiment, try shooting into the shadow side of your face, as you have done here. Then repose yourself to shoot into the highlight side and see the difference. Some additional considerations in portraiture are shooting from a higher vantage point, say 18 inches above where you would normally shoot. Then shoot the same pose but from 18 inches lower than you would normally shoot. You will be interested in seeing the results. Some of these may be more easily done with a willing sugject than with a self-portrait but the important thing is to learn from the experience. Thanks for posting your self-portrait session.

clockdoc, thanks for the comments and suggestions. I was shooting with my 18-55 mm lens, a tripod and a shutter release cable. I use the cable rather than a timer because I can't set the timer and get sharp focus in the shot. So I have to stay within arms reach of my cable while taking the shot.
I'm hoping one day soon to get my hands on a IR cable release so that I can stand farther back and get different shots. But until then it's corded cable or timer.
