Default Working Women

I feel bad that such an old lady has to work so hard to make a living. She was pulling all that weight alone in the middle of the afternoon. Temp around 35c. Its her time to relax and time for the younger generation to take care of her. But you can still see fight in her eyes. What do you guys think?

Great photo. You really captured her life and personality in that one shot. This picture tells a story.

kunaldaswani,

The people I know who work well into their 60's and 70's (by choice or not) seem often to have a much better attitude and state of health, physically and emotionally. Depending on what's in the sacks, this effort might be like working out at a gym. She's just come from the Diagnostic Wellness Center behind her?

If you look long enough at the left side, the vignetting starts to become evident, especially on the topmost sacks, where the light should be bright. You can erase small patches or streaks on a vignette layer to create controlled highlights, giving a more natural look and giving definition to sacks.

Body language certainly says determination; did you try lightening the face/eyes enough to show that "fight?"

I am sure, she won't be, she might have been carrying some plastic waste from the clinic. Its a pity that in this country we have a gigantic population and the "wellness" of the Indian economy (rising at 8.5%) does not reach 40% of the population yet. But, the main issue is the resilience of the down trodden here, the struggle is just a part of their daily routine. I have seen nuns of the Sisiters of Charity (founded by Mother Teresa), in their crisp white gowns walking past street urchins barely covered. I have seen people sit casually and enjoy their afternoon coffee in Starbucks and a mother sitting with her unfed child for a rupee. It hurts, it strikes anyone very hard, but its the reality.
I am sorry, I barged in to say these, I couldn't help it. Kunal, I hope you will forgive me for tresspassing.

kunaldaswani,

Was this a photo in the spirit of the "Stranger" assignment? Do you know any more about this women than what's in the photo?

I know nothing about this woman. Shot this today. I was just riding back to work after a meeting and i saw this lady. She was really struggling to push that cart. I felt certain emotion which i wanted to capture. So rode up a lil futher, stopped the bike, took out the camera and shot.

kunaldaswani,

Goodness, what a perfect time for a self-portrait! To see her life on your face.

First let me say this is a very powerful image ,it goes straight to the heart so i think you caputured emotion that pulls a viewer in ,great photo . second , I as a canadian would never have quesssed this was taken in the USA ,is what i think you ment , based on the content of the photo I felt it was a 3rd world country where these types of things are common , I did not look at the wrighting on the wall behind her as she took my total focus ,reality is heart breaking thanks for reminding me that some times there is more to the photo than what is seen at first glance .
