Default One more portrait

Here's my son - shot at the same time as my daughter. Again, a hair light would have helped a lot, but I wanted to see if anyone had any further suggestions. I also think I need to either decrease the power of the strobe, or angle it a bit different, because here you can see a slight reflection on the backdrop instead of just blackness.

Wow such a sweet kid, I loved the dark backdrop, the predominant yellow in the clothes and wodden horse. Yes, you are right about the strobe, the light is a bit too sharp, so you have burned out right edge, lost left arm and dark hairs. The light on the left side of the face looks perfect, I feel that should be the measure of the maximum light intensity.

Thanks for the input. I've just started playing with strobes for the first time, so I'm still getting my feet wet. I have got a way to go still!

aadam_21,

Your daughter's portrait has a more complete look to it with her hands showing, compared to your son's lowered and missing ones (I am so hoping he is not indeed absent any limbs). A head shot is OK without them; when you have a prop that the hands can interact with, it seems "off" to not show them. Framing is tight, gives a sense of being "boxed in." Basically a charming photo, just some things that could make it a little better.

I would have turned the camera vertical to get more of the body of the horse/child. The horse and child heads seem disconnected. That said, the lighting is great, the color is uniform, and the subject is darn cute! :-)

I think you are off to a good start. The light on the right is just a little too close to the subject. I'll be able to help more when I know you lighting setup, type of reflectors used and distances from the subject. Keep shooting!
