Default Moonrise over Crete

During my recent holiday to Crete I had an accident early on and broke my right arm, so I couldn't take many photo's. This was taken on my first night. I was going for an atmospheric landscape, but landscapes arent really my best subjects. What do you think I could have improved on?

Cretan Moon 2

thanks,

John.

I like the colour of the moon. However, the whole picture looks kinda foggy. Oh, and I like the diagonal lines of the hills!

Firstly, sorry to hear about your arm - is it recovered yet?

I think this photo is very good. It might have been improved if you were able to move a bit further to the right so that you could frame a larger dark triangle in the bottom right but maybe not - it is hard to judge how the rest of the picture would shift.

In post processing, you could adjust the colours a bit. While keeping things subtle, you could probably increase the intensity of the colours a bit (eg. the duplicate overlay effect) and perhaps make the moon a little lighter.

An excellent picture though and perhaps some compensation for your misfortune.

I'd say crop it down a little bit: push the moon farther into the upper left corner. Also, you might want to consider bumping the contrast and saturation and pushing the white balance/hue towards the cooler/bluer end of the spectrum.

JJthethird,

Sympathies for your plight; mine was left wrist, 6 months recovery, last year so no photography woes (pre-DPS). I like your photo as it is, and probably anything you choose to edit. Can you still edit? I'd offer a challenge: get disposable b/w cameras that you can work with one hand and see how fundamental your shots become. Better than withdrawal?

Cheers JC, I'm at the fracture clinic on Thursday and will be begging to be allowed to press my shutter. I'm sure that I will be able to carry my camera on the tripod with one hand. But as my main interest is wildlife photography, I think that setting my hide up may be an issue!! As for editing, I can manage the basics, cropping etc but making a freehand selection is definately out of the question!!

Wulf, Thanks for the suggestions. May try them when I've got a bit better control of my editing. No its not better yet, had to have a plate put in so recovery may take a while. What annoys me is that I've got all this time off work but I cant use it to get out in the field with my camera...Very frustrating!!!!!

Thanks again,

John.

JJthethird,

Forgive the things that come to memory: how do you catch a squirrel? Climb a tree and act like a nut.

In a way, you're lucky it was the arm. Other than awkward cast issues, you might be able to continue shooting. I wondered if a hide could become something you wore, and still be as effective? Like, dressing at home (with help?) in camoflauge, some netting, a strap-on seat? Cameras in a vest?

Hope you are on the mend and will be up to full power soon. Do you have a remote shutter (electroninc/wireless or manual) release that could be used with the camera on a tripod? I agree with Jiminy in that I like it just as it is. I can see multiple layers of tones that nicely separate from each other. I would think it will look even better in print form.

Thanks Clockdoc, I never thought about using my remote, nice one! Thanks also for your comments, I haven't printed it off yet but I will be doing so now to see how it looks.
Cheers,
John.
