The idea is good, I like the part of the garlic in front of the whole garlic. You might want to use a different underground, I find the lines in the table distracting. The piece of garlick in front could use some more light too and maybe get rid of the little piece on the table just left of the piece of garlick, it looks a bit messy.

You should try this again because I like the idea

This is a good idea, but, the edge of the table breaks the story. Its worth experimenting.

Actually, to contradict some of the comments above (*) but I think the wooden surface and the curve of the blue background both enhance the image. They would provide a good "studio" for a whole range of shots - a strong coloured shape, offset by the subtle leading lines in the wood.

I do wonder if the garlic might look better with a bit more light on the front of the clove in the foreground. Focus (there is another area that could be sharpened) suggests that is the subject so it seems odd to have it so dark. If you can get a razor sharp area of focus, that will let you guide the viewer to exactly what the subject is and everything can then be judged in relation to that.

Does that makes sense?

Wulf

(*) Nb. just because I've posted a lot doesn't necessarily mean I know better... often it is a matter of taste.

Agree w/ Wulf. I don't think the leading lines of the table or the curve of the table along the blue background or distracting me in this photo. I feel my eyes are being pulled towards to competing foci(?). The foreground image of the clove wants to be the focus and my eye wants to go there, but because the garlic in the background seems better lit than the clove, I'm being pulled back there to the blurred garlic. Maybe if the foreground clove was lit a bit more my eyes wouldn't be fighting one another.

also moving the garlic clove in the background to the left side will give more balance to the photo. and a fill flash will give the foreground clove a better exposure.

It's interesting, the wood grain, and the "grain" on the front piece of garlic are eerily similar. Perhaps you could explore that.

Again, I have to remind you to copy the HTML code from flickr rather than the original image. It helps us and it helps flickr. Just copy the HTML they give you and then just paste it into the post where you want the picture to go.
