Default Lorikeet

lorikeet

Was taking some photos in my backyard today, and, as per usual, the birds would land for a few seconds, and just as i had my shot set up, they'd fly away hehe

however, i got a few who stuck around long enough for me to shoot them

in PP (photo shop) i cropped it a little and sharpened it, thats all

cheers

Brave_ulysses,

Using ISO mode? Seems little grainy... IMO placement to this guy would be left top intersection/tight crop. But I agree with you about difficulty in catching one!

If you share your EXIF data (camera setting), some one here could help you getting better quality shots!!

Nice catch! You've got the bird in a nice profile position. I like it very much.

However, I think the bird is lost in the picture for two reasons: first, there isn't enough contrast between him and the background and second, I think you need a tighter crop.

The first issue could be addressed by increasing color saturation and making the bird a little lighter than the background. The key here would be not to exagerate the effect.

The tighter crop is tricky.

In my opinion, if you crop enough to exclude the left branch, it would be too tight (for my taste anyway). However, a somewhat wider crop would partially include the left branch which would be ugly because it would look like a mistake.

Experiment ... it's part of the fun!

Loris ...very messy birds! Love the colors of the green naped! A iagree with the position and the grainy look. Maybe a crop and some blur on the background would help a bit. The good news is if they always fly to your backyard you can set up and be prepared again and get better results. Nice catch though I know how hard it is to catch birds....I almost fell off a pier this weekend trying to catch some gulls down by the lake.

thanks for all your comments guys

i think the grainy-ness happened when i sharpened it
the photo was taken about an hour before sunset and between showers so the light was very dull
(thats my excuse and im sticking to it)

will see what i can do in PP and repost

Cheers

EDIT:

lorikeet BW BG

ok, heres the lori again, i blurred the BG more, as well as desaturating it, i also got the little stick in the far right corner out, however now looking at it, he seems to be a bit blurry himself now, i don't know how that happened, i stupidly didnt save the .psd

he did seem to get lost in the BG before, i think the black and white helps him standout more (obviously)

I like the edit and can tolerate the amount of blur to the bird. This edit really helps bring the subject out and it really doesn't look like out of place. Sometimes you desaturate the background and it turns out to look like you pasted the photo onto another. Not this one...
good job now to just get the bird in a better position....

the reason he is in the bottom right is because just out of shot is the top of the clothes line, shame i know, but can't be helped

Brave_ulysses, Welcome

If you wanted to, you could select around the Lorikeet, flip it, raise it, smudge it into the background, and pretend you meant to do that anyway. If you wanted to.

You need a longer lens

Not all can afford a long fast lens (including me). If getting closer to where the birds might land and then remaining camouflaged and absolutely still is a possibility, try it.
