I wonder what is the reason behind his happiness! Is that grass touching his inner surface of leg... happy with his work or might be its his nature to be happy always!!!
Close up may be avoiding unfoucused cluttered bg at right and top. Dont you feel the details washed out due to the harsh sunlight at 2PM? So its time to play with different metering mode, aparture and shutter speed setting to control the exposure! (Hope your camera will allow).

Todd,
Yes its exposure compensation. My camera provides me different types of metering modes: Multi Metering Multi-metering mode reads light from a pattern of points all over the frame. This mode is useful for scenes that don't have much in the way of highlights and shadows. Unless your scene is unusually uniform, Multi-metering's compromise can actually be mostly wrong - any part of your picture that reflects anything other than "average" light will be over- or under-exposed. Center Metering Center-metering mode reads from a mid-sized area in the middle of your frame. It's more accurate than Multi-metering mode, because it allows you to determine which area of your scene is most important to be exposed properly Spot Metering Spot-metering uses a tiny spot in the center of your frame. I use this almost exclusively. It lets you pinpoint exactly where in your scene you want the perfect exposure to be. Your shot includes the direct sunlight area as well as shadow. So your subject which was reflecting more light blown out! If your camera allows try using spot or center metering mode and aim at your subject, half click, hold, recompose and click.
