Default Best Buds (First Shots with new 50mm)

Best Buds

This is picture of my son (Center) and one of his good friends. I took this using my new Nikon 50mm 1.8f as I am trying to get some practice in before we go Vacation.

For P.P. I increased the saturation "slightly" and cropped in a bit.

Any and All Suggestions would be great... Thanks

That's a nice clean pic, cute kids also. The more pics I see with a 50mm lens the more I like the look. I'm considering the Nikkor 50mm f/1.8 for my Nikon D40. It should make for a small package and nice for shots of the kids and other portraits. From what I see it can be rather sharp.

I don't have suggestions really, the reds are very nice there, and the shadow that falls across the little one's eyes from the hat is not too dark. I'd try to darken the sky just a bit (first by using a polarizer, but maybe now with post processing so that it does not seem so wan. I'm not sure what, if anything,. to do about the sharp diagonal created by the shadow on the wooden board towards the left of the kids. It is not distracting at first, but upon continued examination it keeps grabbing my eyes.

I really like the shot. It is the kind of shot I like of my kids. Warm, inviting, friendly, and full of joy. Thanks for posting it.

Best,

Scampi

Default Excellent shot!

I wouldn't change a thing.

The Nikon 50mm f/1.8 is my favorite lens. It's fast and light weight, which makes it easy to lug around on vacation.

Good luck.

mappleby,

If the choice is between showing some trouser, or having a comfortable spacing around the head of the friend, I'd go for space. Too tight, upper left corner.

I have made some cropping adjustments so to leave more room in the top left corner. Is what you had in mind JiminyClickit, or should there be more room?

The only thing I can think of might be to try to get the sky to be a little more vibrant.

mappleby,

It's your call; to me it feels better now, less tight, and the boys are not noticeably smaller. Subjective view, it isn't based on a rule so much as what one likes to see. Sometimes it can be as simple as "a head's width" spacing between body and frame.
