Default My Parents

Used below settings:

Exposure: 0.025 sec (1/40)
Aperture: f/3.5
Focal Length: 27.5 mm
ISO Speed: 80

Time of the day was evening. I tried hard to get smile on my father's face. It worked when I told him a joke!!

Used large aparture to get shallow DOF. This helped me to blur the background and my MOM. This is right from camera and no edit. Any suggetion?

Did you really want to blur your mom (I won't tell her)? If not you might try shooting at a higher ISO (80 is fairly low), you should easily be able to go up to 200 with no grain which would let you rasie the f-stop (number) for more depth of field.

What I do like about it is the cinematic quality. It looks like a still from a movie. It's as if your father was telling a story looking away while your mother stood there watching and listened. If you cropped it to a 16:9 aspect ratio, it'd be even more like a movie still.

That's a good picture - it tells a story.. what that story is of course is up to the observer. I like the shallow dof.

The only main criticism I have of it concerns the clutter in the background... something needs to happen to make it less distracting imho.

odark30,

Thanks a lot for that link. I started usign GIMP, however not getting much time to work on that! Shall give a try and repost the result.

kirbinster,

I took some other shots with different composition and DOF... Here I just want this effect. lol after taking this shot I took one more individual shot.. So not a problem with blur.

brianfarrell,
That is window in the background. Probably I should have considered the wall instead.

PLouie, AndyC, andy2710,

Thanks for your kind words and encouragement.

Palachandra,

Like so many things, it depends on what you wanted this to be. If intended as a portrait, it's well composed and shot, though your Father's eyes could use some lightening. I could imagine doing the same with a portrait of your Mom, featuring her with a smaller background spouse.
