Beautiful shot. If anything was to be tweaked, I'd say a bit more light/contrast on the flower would be good, and serve to highlight the hoverfly even more.

The photo looks a little dark to me. Other than that, nice shot! I like the detail of the fly.

Light is very flat in this shot, more light and shade with make it lively. The front petals are out of focus, so may be you can also concentrate on the DOF. If you can re-organize or zoom-in to place the fly by following the rule of thirds, it will be a better composition.
Good try, the fly is pretty sharp.

Subrataofkris, I'd like to mention that the front petals being soft and out of focus is not necessarily a bad thing. Content and evocativeness count. I recently entered another competition in London, and I had two shots of echinacea. One was perfectly crisp, everything in focus, the other one had front petals which are reminiscent of this shot, but more out of focus. I entered the non-perfect photo. The composition was more interesting and it was much more evocative.
I think Phil's photo can use a bit more light, but there is no need to make every bit of the photo focused to crispiness. Particularly in garden/flower shots, unusual composition, soft focus or unusual focus really count. |

I love how crisp it is, the lighting is a bit dark though.
