I love how the bird seems to pop against the sky. Great shot! I'm new too so my rolodex of technical advice is pretty much empty
All I can think of is that the bird appears to have plenty of room to "fly" through your composition. I also like how the wings are a bit translucent, letting some light glow through. Looks great to me!

If you could push up and move the beautiful bird slightly left and kept it sharper, it could have been a very good photograph. Nice colours, I like them.

great catch! I think with time the positioning will come once the panning and timing come.
I would crop the photo removing the lef and bottom portions some leaving the bird more to the bottom left of the photo. that would give the bird area to move into the frame.... also maybe a smart sharpen on the gull and a softening of the area around just a touch? But for a new photographer and a new camera I say you got a great photo!

I do agree witht he positioning and trying to sharpen the bird up a tad. You captured the blues in the sky and the burd brillianlty. Not an easy task. Well done!

great first try yes..
i find they look best with the wings back lit... these birds are great as starter into the wildlife area of photography,,,, try not to center crop the bird as you have done... remeber the rules of third i know its hard to remmber when you are out ther shooting fast... see the difference.. with yours and mine?? ![]() just posted small version so not to hijack your thread.. click through for larger version.. ^.^
