Default Photographing Live Sports

I recently bought a Canon S3 IS. I haven't yet made use of the plethora of features that it has to offer.

Here is my first try at photographing Live Sport. I used a Multishot mode (3) and the Auto mode to click. What would you suggest would have helped
me take better pictures?

suggest what I could do to improve. There are going to be a few matches held soon so I can practically apply your suggestions.

The one thing I know about this camera for sure is that it has an actual "sports" setting. It's the picture of the guy running on the dial. Maybe give that a try? I haven't tried to take any action shots outdoors myself yet, and the images I got inside my house (not well lit) were grainy. I look forward to seeing what kind of luck you have using the "sports" setting!

Shooting sports with a P&S is tricky, a lot of times you need to crank the ISO which makes grain. At least you have IS though, it eliminates the need for a monopod.

As far as the actual shooting, try to anticipate the action. Put yourself somewhere to get whatever shot you have in mind and wait. You might miss a different shot doing this, but you'll increase your chances of getting the one you have in mind; one good shot is better than two okay shots.

Use either the Sport or M setting (not sure if the S3 IS has M). If you can shoot M, try to keep your shutter speed over 1/250s and ISO as low as possible without sacrificing depth of field. Outdoor sports usually have pretty good lighting, so f/8 or f/11 is possible without maxing out your sensativity.
