mac_man_luke, Welcome

Think I see why you'd take this, but not why at this stage of lighting. Colors might have gotten better later? Less blown sky? Water could be sharper. Horizon dips to the right, easy fix. Any others, same subject?

Hi mac_man_luke,

The composition - perspective and leading lines are very nice, but I expect more contrast in the sky and water. The lines should lead to a place which has a dramatic sky. A slight tighter crop of the bottom might eliminate the section of the black pole at the lower right corner.

I took heaps so i might try to find one that isnt quite as blown out

It was almost dark yet, i couldn't get the colours to capture nicely but it wasn't an overly colourful sunset.

The water is soft because that was the effect i was trying to achieve, but it didnt turn out as good as expected because the water was too calm

Iv replaced the photo linked in the first post.

rotated so the horizon is flat (usually do that but forgot this time)
increased brightness in the shadows as well

for reference, here is the original image:

The sky is still too blown out for my tastes. Everything else in the photo looks good just that sky. Perhaps a graduated ND filter will help with that but I am not too sure since the pier is running diagonally thru the shot. Anyways and HDR would have worked really nicely in this situation.

Yea it is a bit blown out

I was thinking a polariser might have helped as well

I actually took it as a bracketed shot in the aim of creating HDR but i just couldn't get it to look nice, iv tried using photoshop might need to try another program.

thanks all for your comments

I actually like the "soft" look of the water because it trains your eye straight towards the sunset. The leading lines in this picture are great! Awesome photo!

Initially i had tried using photoshop to make a HDR but was not happy with the results so i never posted it, after a bit of reading i decided to try photomatix pro - here is the results, i think it turned out pretty damn well!
