Default BW Leaf & Raindrops

Hi Folks:

Another attempt from a bit ago that I'm still trying to figure out a bit. Shot in color, added a warm tint in Adobe Lightroom. I like the off-center position of the leaf, but wished I could have done better with DOF. The twig coming off to the side is a bit distracting, I think.

EXIF: Canon S3 IS, ISO 80, 1/25 at f/4.5, 6mm, No Flash, Monopod

Gassho,

Scampi

i quite like what you've done.....granted the depth of field, to my eye, isnn't as wide as it should have been....all in all, though, it works for me......

i think i heard somewhere before that you should set your focus on the closest object that you want in focus......ie.....the closest raindrop/dewdrop in this photo....

thanks for sharing

Thanks Peeperita. Yes, a better depth of focus would have helped I think. Part of the limitation stems from the Canon S3 IS's lens itself: this close to the leaf (Supermacro mode) one is fairly constrained as to aperture. Ideally below f/4.5 would have been best.

Funny, although the colors were nice, this shot just did not do it for me in color.

Thanks again!

you can blur the background more by masking out the leaf on the left and then creating a separate layer for the background and applying a blur filter to it. this might help to remove some of the distracting background from the photo.

Oh and you can close out the twigs sticking out of the leaf but the shadow they cast on the leaf will be a bit harder to remove. How much easier would it have beeen to just snap the twigs off when you shot it originally.

Rex, thanks. I'll try the masking thing in Photoshop. I guess I could have snapped off the twigs, but I'm OK with the results and did not have to cause any more damage to anything there for the purposes of the shot. Too much motion also could have shaken the drops off the leaf surface.

In any case, if I am successful at the masking of that leaf on the left, I will post again the result.

Thanks Rex, I appreciate the insights,

Scampi
