I know the lighting is over powering but I will take any advice or suggestions that any one may have to improve the shot.

As you said yourself, the backlight is far too overpowering, though i presume it's the sun?
It would be interesting if yo could capture it with a less intense source, in a darker place so that the rays of light were visible coming through between each leaf... though due to lack of experience/knowledge i couldn't tell you how to achieve such an effect, but hopefully someone will be able to advise you (and me) on how it would be done!

I agree , but always like a chalange ,so was wondering what your setttings were . sometimes you can get some interesting effects playing with your settings .a pol filter ,or 2 stacked can give good results , an interesting subject with a lot of possabiltys ,I wish i had had a palm leaf to play with
did you try different angles ,IMO that too can make or break this kind of shot , I think you were shooting too straight on ,a step either way may have made allowed the light rays to filter ,a cool effect ,the back light effect works best for things like flowers because they are thin and allows light to pass , this leaf is more like a blind and only allows light to flow between the open areas . Look forward to seeing more of your work .

Here are my settings below:
Exposure: 0.125 sec (1/8) Aperture: f/2.8 Focal Length: 6.3 mm ISO Speed: 160 I didn't use a pol filter I didn't even think of it. the light was coming through the leaf as well the actually leaf was darker.

seeing as we both use the same camera I can only tell you what I would try and that would be in PASM mode I would choose A &,f 8 , the F8 would be the same as squinting your eyes so check it out and see how the light looks , I find that with the light ,dark contrast like that it gives a nice star effect to candle light ,but this would not be that extream ,it's worth a try ,that would be a nice captuer if you can get it right . maybe some others can give you better advice . good luck .
