I really like the low perspective and the peaceful quality of the shot. The dof is good for the background, but a little distracting to have that blur at the front of the image. You could highlight the pinecone a bit to help it really stand out against the almost same color background. When I go to the large size of your image and crop off some of the treetops and a little of the frontground, the pinecone stands out better without losing the appeal of it's surroundings.

I agree with saralonde here - the crop is hurting the pinecone a little, but it is still an interesting shot. I like the dof overall and the crispness of the pinecone, but it needs to stand out a tad bit more imo.

I'm just starting out with photography so take my comments with a grain of salt...

I like it. I wouldn't crop off too much of the surroundings. It gives you a sense of the pinecone's perspective - "I'm just a tiny pinecone in a great big forest." I do find the bright light in the background a little distracting though.

Thanks both of you for the comments, they're very helpful.

I see exactly what you are saying about the crop, and i think i may well replace the image on dA with a cropped version...
I need to post me some more photos on here, it's brilliant to get useful critique

Edit: also, thanks gnomeskull, always good to hear a range of opinions
