Certainly anything that gets light to reflect would work, and if you had another (opaque) to prevent overhead Sun from reaching plant bloom, it would look like evening. If you have an assistant?

Your exif data shows that you were using a 270mm focal length. If you can get closer to the subject and use a little fill flash (iTTL on the D50 does this quite well) you could eliminate the darkest part of the shadows and still maintain the backlighting effect.

Depending on what program you are using you may even try just setting your program in fill flash and to what ever setting and area you want it to cover
