Default New Bloom

Good Morning everyone, on my walk through central park this weekend I snapped a few photos and this was my favorite of the group.

Thoughts/suggestions?

Flower

One other thing I would love your comments on...I find myself always taking flower photos, I would like to try and expand my horizons to people, architecture, etc. Any suggestions on how to go about this? I know this might be a tough question to get answers for but thought I would throw it out there.

Cheers,
aaron

parts of the flower seem burned out. it's for this sort of thing that you want avoid this type of shooting during midday. in terms of composition, it seems solid, though I'm somewhat jaded when it comes to flower pictures. as for the expansion of your horizons... just try. at first it's hit or miss, but eventually you'll find a style and it'll stick. look to those sorts of images from other photographers for inspiration.

Christopher,

Thanks for the comments. I agree about the flower being a little bit burned out, it just happened to be where I was at 1pm on a sunny day.

I will definitely take your suggestions on expanding my horizons. Thanks!

Aaron

I do not have much info to critique about your photo. It is lovely. I'd probably do a little bit of cropping to give a fuller frame view (but i think that is really all in preference).

However, in terms of taking photos of other things besides flowers. I recommend walking slower. In the city that I live in, I work in the heart of downtown. There are many unique buildings and architecture. Everyday I go for a stroll with camera, and I make sure I try to observe something new. It is facsinating the little details that pop out after a while that you never seem to notice. I also try to imagine myself as a little kid. If I was a little kid what does this look like? I try to capture this. (It provides a unique perspective)...

hmm, what else do I do...oh I look for lighting! Are there any area particular strange things happening on a building with the light? Is it bouncing? Are there reflections? Probably the best example that I can think of ...that I found is this photo that I shot:

It might provide some clarity.

Overall, as Chris said. Just try it. Take photos. See what works for you, and doesn't work for you

Good luck!

Thanks so much for the post! I will definitely take all of this into consideration! Its great to hear how other photographers look at things, and think of things as they go on their own daily "camera walks" as I refer to them

I think one of my difficulties is that I always stay in my neighborhood. I need to just start walking through the other boroughs and villages of NYC. Maybe spark some imagination.

cheers,
Aaron

Its a nice photo. I lke the bud next to the bloomed flower.
On the other qustion about photographing people i think about it all the time but am leary of their reactions. I don't know how people would react if they saw me snapping photos of them.

davis.aaron,

You already know a dozen ways to retake this shot, so I'll take you into another area. If you feel funny switching from flowers to concrete and steel, try combining them. First time in Syracuse downtown, I found a dwarf Morning Glory and placed it on various fixtures, walls, etc. Shown is the base of a street light standard:

The uncomfortable feeling I have looking at your bloom is the left-down direction the face takes. Nature says bottom-up, and while experimenting is encouraged, it's a risk.

I think I would prefer to see it flipped so the flower is facing up. It just seems more natural.
