I wanted to photograph these beets because they had such pretty colors and patterns, but couldn't figure out how to show them to best advantage. How would you improve this, either compositionally or technically? Thanks!

Hi annie,

I have seen many corourful patterns in this forum and otherwise, in all of them, the shape of the objects need to be repitative. My observation in this case is, if you select the same kind of shapes and lay them on the table and photograph them, you will achieve the purpose compositionally. As for colours, you can work on the saturation and levels and make them look brighter.

Keep the experiment going and share your shots.

i love the colors, and can see why you'd want to capture those beautiful beets. what i like in food photography, is when the food is placed in a bowl or plate that sort of complements the color/texture of the food. i think a crisp white bowl in natural light would look beautiful.

Thanks to both of you for the great ideas. It's interesting that Subrata suggested making it more abstract and stylized, and Laika is Happy Now recommended making it more realistic and contextual. I think the problem with my shot is that it's neither here nor there but right in the middle--thanks for helping me to pinpoint that
