Default my first day with camera and lens

not bad.. I think you may have done better to try to move the papers but sometimes that can't happen.. i'd probably try to either crop out the master (which is part of the picture) or crop out the dino (or have tried to take it without the dino) both detract from the focus and make the eyes roam a bit. On one hand you could do the dog and master focus or you could have the dog being content and having the dino being ignored as a compare/contrast..

I agree. Cropped, this could be a really nice picture. As it is, it's a little too cluttered. But really nice for your first day! Hope to see lots more.

I think the background is what throws the balance off. Also, to see the master's hand would have added to the mood.

I think having the dog take up 2/3 of the right side and the master on the 1/3 of the left side with his hand in the bottom-right 1/3 (resting on the dog's neck) would have balanced it nicely.
