I think the colors look a bit more natural and faded in the first picture, plus more soft sunlight in the first pic...there's a lot of shadow in the second.
I would have loved to see what was behind/around the flag...was it a nice day out, was there a bright blue sky with some clouds for contrast...maybe even giving a small bit of an american flag with a big blue sky with bright white clouds could give even more emphasis to the flag and what it stands for, as opposed to filling the frame with it? I see it both ways though, cool pic. |

I like the first one much better, it's better lit and I'm not sure whether I would like it better in a context.. I kinda like it the way it is. The only distracting thing for me is the flag pole in the top left but that can't really be helped.
Oh, I disagree with your title, but I'm not about to get into a political argument. |

The first image is the best one in my opinion. I don't think you need to do anything with it.

I say the first due to the fact the stars look like they are highlighted by the sunlight showing a postive uplifting image. the second is showing a shadowed stars and seems to come across as sad. (that is just my opinion)

Both of these images are direct from the camera, no post processing as of yet. I may clone out the top of the flagpole, I can't really tell if it is distracting or not. They were taken in the mid-afternoon I believe...around 3:00 I would guess. It was a day with a pretty bland sky, as you can see around the edges of the flag, so I may be able to bump that up a bit, but a lot of sky in the background wouldn't help I don't think...not a great "sky day".
