Default Parrots on a row

I was visiting Knuthenborg safaripark on Falster in Denmark and they also had a section with birds. I saw these parrots in a cage where they sat nicely on a row. The only problem was that the cage was build with very thick wire and there was a fence a few feet from the cage. I got as close as possible to the cage - stretch my arms with my powershot in front of me and with aperture of f/3.5 to get the wire invisible - and to get a narrow DOF. I tried to focus on the eye of the bird - as the textbook says.

In addition to the DOF I believe that the wire also gives a kind of blur around the birds face - or is it just me?

I need a hint on what to do better?

how far from the cage were the parrots? if they were farther away you didn't need to shoot at 3.5 a higher fstop number would have given you more depth of field getting more of the parrots in focus and still you would not be able to see the fence. Someone posted a link to a depth of field calculator which was very helpful for me. I will try to find it when I get home.

Knuthenborg Safaripark - it has sure been a long time since I was there last

Cambridge in color has a DOF calculator - http://www.cambridgeincolour.com/tut...h-of-field.htm

As for the photo - I really don't see any noticeable evidence of cage wires. Well, maybe a little blur in a vertical column just left to the head of the bird in focus, but it's not really a problem. That besides - I think it would have been great to have more of the lower part of the birds instead of the background in the top.

I think you handled the DOF well, if there is an area to improve on would be to try a different angle (from above/below/right perhaps) so that there wouldn't be any cage visible in the background as that gives away that its a cage.
