Default Yashica D

Now I know that this is a Digital Photography School, so I hope I dont get to many complaints about the following photo. My dad gave me his 1972 Yashica D and I decided to play around with it this past weekend. It is 120 Film Format, so obviously not digital, and I had to scan them to get them online. Apologies for it not being digital, but I would love your thoughts.

I have never photographed in Black and White before (especially black and white film!) so this is the best i could do for my first attempt. Thoughts / Suggestions?

Image 1 (top Right) - Image 2 (top middle) - and so on and so forth...

PS...I am trying to using the Flock Browser of just dragging and dropping from my flickr account media bar. so I hope it works.

Hi Aaron (or is it Davis?), and welcome --

Can I suggest that in the Critique Forum you post one photo at a time (unless you have a few of the same subject)? One, for my sake, it is a bit overwhelming to have to tackle more than one; two, for others' sake, when you post six pics at once you consume critical resources that probably should be spread out over other members; and three, for your own sake, you will get a lot more and better response if you limit your thread to a single photo.

Also, posting a bigger shot (the flickr medium size seems to work) makes it easier for us to see and critique.

So, how about you pick one for today, and give us the rest over the coming days.

Hey, I saw this post after having figured out how to make it bigger. My apologies for reposting all 6. I will definitely crop it down to just 1 image...

Again, sorry for the confusion.

So sorry for all the posts....

here is my favorite of all of the B & W pictures I took. It had been raining for a bit so people were trying to wait it out under the bridge...

OK then --

I saw your comment about people not minding that this is a film shot. I don't mind, but because this is a film shot I find myself with less to say. I gather the tones and contrast are probably a function of your film choice, and the Yashica's optics (I remember reading somewhere that some Yashica's sort of had Holga-like properties -- is this one of them?).

The square crop is good (right out of the camera?), and I do like the tones. Score one for old-fashioned film. Composition works well, with tones and textures of the plaza. The white shirts add a nice element of contrast. Good photo.

Thanks for the comments Elay! Really appreciated. There was a boy that would have balanced the photo perfectly in the sort of lower left, in a white shirt and yellow umbrella (giving light tones in b & w) but right as I was about to snap the photo his mother called him and he left.

You are right about the film, I did no cropping, it shots square images. As for the specifics of the Yashica D I am not sure, but i linked to the info on the camerapedia site. I dont know much about the camera, and am slowly learning.

davis.aaron,

Composition is working for you in those shots. Only problem seems to be getting them to stay still as you close the scanner lid. Do you post process (not these, just in general)?
