FX57,

Very good size and unusual composition. I can see now there may be a problem of focus. Can you tell us the camera and settings this was shot with? Time of day, weather, things that could determine how a better outcome may be had on your next shots?

That is the name of the flower.
It grows very high in the Andes.
The picture was taken very early in the morning just as the sun was rising it was very foggy.
I am not sure if this is wath you ask for:

You did well, mostly we look at shutter speed, aperture, ISO, lens/focal length, and whether flash was used. For this photo, seeing early morning and foggy explains the slight grayness and lack of highlights.

The position of the right part of flower is too close to the frame, and it could improve the look if you were to move subject more diagonal, away from center. That being said, I like the way it looks in your photo. Soft subtle colors are wonderful. Hope you enjoy DPS and will show us more of your photos.

Chuquiragua
Jimi, what do you mean to move the subject more diagonal? Using the rule of 3s?
Thanks for your comments.

FX57,

Because you have a horizon (actually a waterline) in this photo, turning it won't look so good. If you were to take this same flower again, though, and found an angle to put those stems on right side at a slant (or better still, not include them), there would be better composition. Having a subject parallel to frame gives your eye a less interesting view.

Not sure if this photo can be fixed to reflect what I've described. I'd be tempted to remove the b/g stalks, crop left side and top to put bloom in thirds position. You'd still have location identity, and not any distracting dark objects.

Diagonal is the angle from one corner to opposite corner, and is a way to place subjects in a frame to create a more interesting look. Your bloom stem is on a diagonal.

FX57,

As an example:

Andean

I would not have anyone substitute their vision for mine; this is another view of your bloom that could be appreciated for its placement. You can look at anything in a hundred ways, I just hope to present that here. Still, I like your original, because it is original.

Default Modified pict.

I love what you did with my picture. I see now what you mean by diagonals and distracting elements.

FX57, Thanks

It's hard to describe that look in words.
