I was trying to get that extreme DOF and I liked the way it turned out. I would really appreciate some comments on this one.

magnus9,

I feel the blur effect at the bottom of the frame distracting my attention.

magnus9,

Homer says, "D'oh!" An angle would bring interest, less DoF would bring out the kind of instrument photographed, and color would just warm things up.

I don't mind the black and white effect and I love the liquidity of the shiny metal. However, I agree with Palachandra about the blurred bell of the instrument being distracting and also Jiminy's suggestion about putting the instrument on more of an angle.

I would want to keep the narrow DoF though - it looks great as it transforms from sharp focus to smooth bokeh at the top of the picture.

I'm with Wulf.

The bottom right is a problem for me, and prevents me from understanding what is going on. I wondered if it was the bell, or even some other object protruding. If you could find an angle that cuts that part out you have a nice photograph.

When I put my hand over the bottom 1/2 or so of the shot (low-tech cropping) the picture is much stronger and makes much more sense. (I wouldn't suggest you crop this particular shot though, because I think a long vertical would suit the composition.)

Hands over the picture may be low tech but it is a great way to quickly help visualise the effect of different crops. Just try not to rub your grubby hands all over the screen!

Simple repositioning would probably do the trick, lay the horn down so it's a little more horizontal, so the bell is in the same plane as everything else. Going diagonallly through the frame is also something worth experimenting with.

How's this? I angled it and cut out most of the bell though I really like the wau it looks in B&W so I kept that.
