Default Running dogs

Our 2 dogs at the dog park.

I cropped the shot, and sharpened it a little.

I should have used a higher ISO to better stop them in motion. I have a tendency not to pay attention to the details of my camera, being used to point and shoots.

Camera model: Canon EOS DIGITAL REBEL
Date/Time: 2007:07:29 15:45:05
Resolution: 800 x 541
Flash used: No
Focal length: 70.0mm (35mm equivalent: 251mm)
CCD width: 10.03mm
Exposure time: 0.0100 s (1/100)
Aperture: f/7.1
ISO equiv.: 200
Whitebalance: Auto

Is that really correct? On my Nikon the factor is 1.5 so 70mm is equivalent to 105mm in 35 mm terms, is the multiplier on your camera really 3.59?

By looking at the ground, you got the depth-of field perfect using F/7.1. However the 1/100 second shutter speed just wasn't fast enough to stop those active little guys even though action coming straight at the camera is usually the easiest to stop. This result should encourage you to start using all of the manual features of your fine camera. Even though blurry, it is still an interesting shot.

In case of living creatures, it is better to freeze them in motion. For that you have to increase the shutter speed, try to use a Shutter Speed Priority setting. Accordingly, to keep the same aperture, you have to raise the ISO.

You could have tried ISO 400/800, 1/250 and let the F No adjust itself.

This is the first time I've tried to photograph our dogs. They are really hard because they run so fast. Later in the day, I switched to burst mode and I upped the ISO, but I didn't get any better shots.

You can also trying panning, hold your camera firmly, take a slow shutter speed and follow one dog as it runs across the screen. In any opportune moment just click. You will have a clear image of dog with blurry background. But you need practise.
