ff151,
Clicked on for a larger view, just got an advertisement. Photo is soft focus, and mostly attention is drawn by "P-1" on left. Flag reflection is a good idea, just needs reshot, closer, in focus

Hey Jiminy,
I am having a problem with "soft focus". It seems to be in sharp focus through the eyepiece, but most pics are not in "sharp" focus. Any ideas why?

ff151,
That sometimes makes itself known in a very large view. This looked as if the camera had focussed and then was moved over to get the reflection. My OOF shots happen mostly from darkness of subject or fur, clothing, things the system can't get a grip on. Your Nikon, I don't know. Could you list the settings for this photo?

ff151,
I just wish there was more to suggest. Speed doesn't seem to be the problem. If you handheld the shot, the speed could have overcome a minor movement. A suspicion is building that the cooperation between that lens and camera may not always allow proper focus, but if you've gotten any sharp focus shots with it, that theory's unfounded. Sunday may bring you answers from those not on tonight.

I wonder of depth of field could be the problem? It looks sharpish in the very foreground to me, and then focus falls away.
Unless you are 1) shooting in low light and need the big aperture, or 2) are deliberately going for out of focus effects, I would think that you would normally be wanting to shoot scenes like this at f/8, 11 or 16. If your shutter speed was 10/3200 (1/320 i guess?) then you may not have a lot of flexibility, but if you boosted your ISO to 800, dropped your shutter speed to 1/200 or so (and relied on the lens's VR) to let you get to f/8, maybe that would solve your softness problem? EL
