Default Kiss My Rat

Fuji FP S3100: ISO 100 - f/3 - 1/320sec - 36mm - Noon

If your town has a Renaissance Fair or Festival, it's a rich source of material and challenges. Bright Sun, deep shadows, animals, crowds, food . . . and strange customs from a time when people amused themselves simply. Maidens sitting on a balconey would drop an object on a string or ribbon and shout "Kiss My Rat!" Not sure if the goal was to shock, but it does.

Without the explanation, would this crop suggest "balconey?"

Jiminy, its just my opinion but I don't think it suggests balconey. My interpretation is "Melencholy girl, deep in thought on her porch". Great shot though, at first I thought, that would look stunning in B&W. But on second thoughts it already has a kind of sepia look to it. Very nice.

John.

JJthethird,

I'd be happy with "porch," since you got "melancholy."

JC I don’t know about the occasion.... For me it looks like she is in deep thought and lost in her world!

I like the lighting that made this shot unusual (just like painting). I thought she was sitting in a room and light was coming from the window and foreground is kind of furniture, before reading your explanation!

My personal preference would be to place her between two poles, showing full pole on left side and cropping some at right (probably not showing her legs). To provide kind of frame... just my opinion I may be wrong.

The sepia-like colouring captures the mood and period nicely.

windrider86,

The Cinderella who's still cleaning up after her wicked stepsisters? Yes, and a lot of the characterizations had that story quality to them, really a great group of performers this year.

Palachandra,

Good ideas, she was cropped square once. Also portrait. Each time I took out the foot, it changed the way I remembered the overall scene. Surrounded by all wood, she appeared to be in a box. This was a lucky shot: two minutes after, she went inside and I didn't see anyone else with this same air of innocence the rest of the afternoon.

purplepixie,

Looking over the 100-some photos, they mostly have either this tone or green from all the tree reflections and filtered light. Her red hair and light clothing made the rest happen.
