First one has much more character and interest. B&W just doesn't do it here. Ithink the shadows add alot too. I really like the first one and the other two just look flat in comparison.

ToddC,

Not a fair comparison: B is a better crop for hand, and shows detail of eye better. It's also turned a few degrees further away from camera, and lit lower on the right side. A is dramatic, C is a B/W photo. Which is better depends on how you intend to use them.

Having just left the Strobist's site, I would have guessed you were experimenting with flash placement. As the others have said, it is a matter of personal preference as the first two each have merit, depending on what you were trying to achieve. At first glance my vote would have been for the first one.

Definitly the first one, for B&W you need to up the contrast not just desaturate and leave it.
