Hi. I suspect you like the photo because it is your dog and you have an attachment to the pooch. While it is a cute dog shot and well exposed, it is a little soft overall. As hard as it is we have to remember to look beyod the subject for clutter such as the blue flower pot in the top of the frame. I realize this was probably a quick shot intended for your personal enjoyment and you didn't have time to remove it lest you distract Jack.

Cute dog! Definitely a good model for you to practice shooting. I like that you tried to get in nice and close. Best advice right now: make sure your focus is sharp. Handheld can sometimes come out a little soft. You might want to use a tripod or put your camera on a steady surface for portraits. And as Clockdoc said, watch your surroundings. You can sometimes crop out little extras you may not be able to control, but it is easier to not have them in the first place!
