Default ...And Relax

I can't really decide if this is just an average shot or whether it captures a mood sufficiently. What do you guys think?

Sony DSLR-A100 ; 1/320sec at f/5.6 ; ISO100 ; 250mm on 75-300 (tripod mounted)

A little cropping and cloned a plant out from the left edge of the shot.

thingy,

Good stuff:
his pose follows the shape of the bench.
light patterns under bench break up that shadow.
face/head against black b/g makes it strong subject.
it's well shot.

It's a great subject, but the dark background kind of irks me.

The black background kind of confused me at the beginning, when i could only see the top half of the photo. I thought that the man was sleeping on the bench at night time whilst under a street lamp. But then when i scrolled down, i realised that it was day time, which kind of dissappointed me. It might be possible to acheive a night time appearance with a lot of photoshopping-i don't know- i do think the photo is very good at the moment , but i just can't get that perfect image(in my humble opinion) out of my mind where a man has fallen asleep on a bench under a streetlight at night.........maybe i'll have to go and find a park bench under a streetlight and set up camp with my camera

Oh...did i mention that i thought this still was very good as is?

Thanks for all your feedback. The shot is growing on me but something still just doesn't click. I wondered whether anyone would comment on the dark shaded background as this was something that I wasnt sure worked. In one sense I think Jiminy is right that it helps the subject stand out clearly, but on another the background seems to dominate a large area of the shot. Your comments have helped me decide that this is definitely a keeper anyway so thanks again for all your C&C.

G

PS: stevesutt89 - Nice idea for a shot, let us know if you ever get a go at it.
