Default Pacific Sunset

I was on a dinner cruise when I looked up and saw this. I dropped my fork and ran out to the bow mid-dinner to get this one. Please critique. I have so much more to learn!

tonetta33,

Worth indigestion to get, made especially interesting by gulls posing on rocks, and reflection. I would tighten the crop some to focus more on the middle. Also offset the sun to the right. So, a little off the left, more off the top, and most off right, in my view.

Another shot where I'm agreeing with JC. Beautiful sunset, but sometimes they look a little better when the sun is not centered but off to the side. Definitely was worth leaving dinner for though.

I like each sunset to be off to one side or another. That does not always happen but it is better when it does. JC is on the mark... again.

For me... JMO... I would move the sun to left or right, I like the right more, increase saturation, sharpen a hair. Those rays are beautiful.. I would want to show them off more.

I don't have PS on this computer so I couldn't adjust the saturation, but here's what I came up with...Thank you all for your feedback!

tonetta33,

The real test: does it retain what you liked about original, while presenting it in a pleasing and more intense way?

I have mixed feelings about it. It definately looks better with the adjustment of sharpness...but the original has more of an "ominous" feeling about it - IMO. I like them both, although I think I should crop the second one even more...it's too square.

I think the second version has more punch than the first. It's a good sunset image, sometimes the sky is too clear for it to be interesting, but you were lucky enough to get interesting cloud formations that day. Agreed that you could further benefit from additional saturation. What kind of camera are you using and what settings?

I like the first better. I know the centered sun is not Politically correct photographically speaking but its the focus and the rays in the clouds....
The horizon being in the lower third is great too. I think this rule breaking photo is great! I love sunrays and this sunset has got some great ones. Good choice to drop the utensil and pic up the camera. I need to do that more often....I miss too many shots.

I guess Im the only one liking the centered sunset.....
Hope you don't mind but I took a crop of it and seen how it made the shot look.
