Hi Everybody, my husband just bought me my dream - Canon 350D. I absolutely love it, there is so much to learn!! I took this after having my camera for 3 days. Please be honest - I am less then amature and need all the help I can get. Thanks a lot.

There's not much we can tell about the thumbnail you uploaded. Try something in a higher resolution ;-)
From what I can see I can give some feedback, though. First, if you want to use your flash at all, try bouncing it from the ceiling. If you're using the built-in flash, you can easily create a reflector from some cardboard and tin foil. That'll soften the harsh light and give a more 3D look. The fire in the background doesn't really add to the admosphere because of its position and also because of the hard flash. If you rotate your kid 90 degrees toward the fire, you can have the fire light his face. You can then play around with the angles of the two lights you have - the flash and the fire. For example, try flashing from the left (use that reflector to bounce the flash to a wall on the left, for instance) and placing the fire on the right.
