Default A single rose...

Rose

I found this while exploring around the rocks near my house, by an old pier. It was just a single rose, on a rock about... 25 feet off the floor. Took me a while to get up to this rock, wearing possibly the least grippy shoes on ever, carrying a backpack with my camera bag inside, my camera round my neck, in around 2ºC cold. It wasnt fun. Anyway, let the criticism commence :]

Beautiful image. Excellent contrast and DOF. Well done!

i raelly cant fault it i think its fantastic! one thing that if i could only maybe slightly point out would be using the rules of 3rds, having said that, you could have gone out purposely to break it. And that would have to be my only critisim and its so slight at that

I have to admit, this is my first post since joining the forum, but I just had to say that your shot is stunning. Your DOF is perfect and the contrast creates this, I guess, mystical feel... The rose comes across as a light shining through the gloom.

That's just my two cents... a great shot.

I tend to try to always abide by the rule of 1/3rds, but I was balanced on a small ledge in very slippery shoes with around £750 worth of camera equipment around my neck and didn't really want to fall off! But I'm glad to hear you like the shot! Feel free to check out my website and flickr, add me to your contacts if you wish, links are in my sig. Thanks guys!

Sounds like you were mroe concerned about the Camera than yourself :P

I like it, and being a white rose with a dark background makes it feel more mystical, like a beacon of hope in the darkness? Wow, that's really cheesey.

And you could say that you are using the rule of 3rds vertically, as the stem and white head of the Rose are in the top 3rd.

gorgeous shot. I might have moved or pulled off that one sprig of leaves... the one that's face-down. But that's all I'd change. The contrast between the rose and the rocks, light and dark... very well done.

With all that relative darkness in the bottom right, it looks as if it is crying out to be used as a book cover (if you want to go commercial) or as the basis for a montage (extra elements that might hint why a single rose is lying abandoned in such a place).

On its own merits, I think it is a good shot but find myself a little put off by the large dark area.
