Hi Andy,
I think you have the makings of a good shot here. Let's start witht he background. When you use flash, depending on the size and brightness of the room, if the subject is any distance from a wall or other reflective surface, the light will fall off quickly, like shooting into a cave. Here you are losing the separating of the child's hair against that dark void in the background. It may have worked well if you could have positioned her with the light in the background directly behind her for some separation. Or in post processing, you may try to clone out the light as it only adds some distraction. On-camera flash also tends to flatten facial features and modeling. Did you take one that also included the person holding the child? It may make for a more complete picture rather than showing part of the shirt and hand. Keep shooting and posting when you have the time with your job.
